ORGANIZING TIPS OF THE MONTH: AUGUST 2006
Back To School Organizing
- Map out a Weekly Family Calendar on the same day each week. Post it in a central location so everyone can see their time commitments for the week.
- Have a desk top hanging file with a folder for each child. Check book bags daily. Note “to do” dates on your calendar; file papers that need future attention. Immediately process papers that need to be returned, and put them back in the book bags.
- For each family member, have a basket or bin and a sturdy coat hook near the door. Coats, book bags, and purses go on the hooks; hats, gloves, and items that cannot be hung up go in the bins.
- Create a family notebook with tabs for emergency numbers, neighbors’ phone numbers, and school information. Also have a tab for family members to enter their contact information and sports/practice/club/work schedules. For when dinner time is hectic, the notebook is also a good place to store take-out menus in clear page protectors.
- Have an errand tote that you can grab as you go out the door. Place library books, items to be returned to stores, dry cleaning claim checks, etc. in the tote.
- To avoid piles of keepsake school work, select two pieces per child per month to keep. Place in labeled memento boxes.
- Each child should have their own laundry bin. Dirty clothes will be less likely to get mixed with clean clothes. Dressing before school will go more smoothly.
- Use a timer to help with time management. It acts as a neutral reminder for children to move on to the next task—homework, music practice, reading, break time.
- Place clothes at child level. Hook extenders onto high closet rods so children can reach their hanging clothes. Put folding clothes on low shelves or in bottom dresser drawers. Children will be able to dress themselves and put their clean clothes away.
- If your children do homework at a table rather than a desk, supply each child with a container filled with school supplies. Be sure to put name labels on the containers.
