The Situation
This family had a full plate running two successful businesses, while raising three active children and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Providing healthy, organic homemade meals for the family was important, but the lack of organization in the two refrigerators and three freezers made finding the food difficult.  They also did not know what food inventory they had, and at times bought too much.

The Solution
We removed the frozen food from the three freezers and separated the categories into bins. We also labeled the outside of the freezer with which category of food was stored inside.

The Situation
This professional client recently moved into a magnificent high-rise condominium, and discovered the existing closets were not up to the task of storing her clothing and accessories adequately. Both her master and guest closets had a single rod and one shelf around the perimeter, which meant a lot of wasted space in closets with 10-foot ceilings.

The Solution
We custom designed the master closet to maximize the use of all available wall space. Clothing was organized onto single and double hanging rods. Purses can be clearly seen, displayed within reach on higher shelves. Scarves, hats and workout gear were sorted into matching labeled baskets.

Before & After: Attacking clutter in the basement and finding a home for the treasures

The Situation

This family’s large basement store-room had become a catchall for camping gear, entertaining items, unopened boxes from previous moves, inherited art work, mementos, photos, toys, crafts, and gift wrap.

The family was  frustrated and overwhelmed, because they wanted access to many of these items. They also wanted to solve the mystery of what was in the unopened boxes.

The Solution

We attacked the clutter with a divide and conquer strategy. Using three other basement rooms — since we couldn’t move in the cluttered room — we brought out items and divided everything into the categories mentioned above.
Once the items were sorted, we conquered each category and pulled out volumes of items to donate, sell or toss.
When every category was sorted, Laura created a storage plan for the room consisting of heavy duty metal shelving. Every category had a home and each shelf unit was labeled. One side of the room (not pictured) was just for crafting and gift wrap.
The family was happy to know that the unopened boxes were children’s toys and books long outgrown. Most of it went to a foster care charity. They are also thrilled to now be able to find anything in their basement in 15 seconds or less!

The Situation
The client moved and now it was time to set up her beautiful new closet.

The Solution
Laura created a plan to make the clothes, accessories and shoes easy to access, and still have clearly defined categories: casual, business, sportswear and formal.

The plan was based on the volume of each clothing category. The clothing and shoes were grouped by type, style, and then color. The purses were grouped by size, color and frequency of use.

In addition, making everything easy to access meant setting the correct heights for all movable rods and shelves.

Before & After: Artist’s garage workshop lets creativity flow

The Situation

This creative artist has a home-based business making unique wooden pieces. Her creativity was being blocked by the inability to find her tools and supplies. She also lacked space to work on large scale pieces, as well as an area for storing decor and accessories.

The Solution

We sorted the wood by size into crates. The large collection of paint, and other supplies were organized by category, and then stored in labeled containers. We rearranged work tables and shelving, and created space for the woodworking and power tools to have their own stations.

The Situation
This client needed space for treasured family mementos that she had just inherited, as well as craft supplies. She lived in an older home with limited space, but desired an uncluttered look.

The Solution
The guest room closet, with just a single rod and 2 shelves was the ideal candidate for a creative, but inexpensive makeover. We added custom shelves to maximize every inch of the closet.  This created space for the inherited items, craft storage and two filing cabinets for archived and estate papers. The client was thrilled to discover that she was able to store so much behind the closed doors of this under-utilized space.

The Situation
Downsizing has many advantages, but can also pose a problem when it comes to storage. This client had limited storage in her town home, so she was unable to find a solution for bulk supplies, utility items and larger things, such as entertaining coolers and trays, and a cat carrier.

The Solution
We grouped like items into zones on sturdy mobile shelving to enable the home owner to move them easily for cleaning. Smaller items were stored in clear plastic boxes within their zone. This solution will help with the rotation of stock, too.

After Laura Ray Organizing
You may love decking the halls, but not un-decking them (is that a word?). Well…there’s help.
One of the services Laura Ray Organizing offers is helping clients put away their Christmas decorations. Proper boxes or bags, if needed, are selected for all of the festive decor and all are labeled. Boxes are packed and stowed in your storage area.

Christmas is put away in a flash like Santa’s sleigh, and decking the halls next year is merry since ornaments are organized and easy to find.

Laura interviewed by the Atlanta Journal/Constitution: Organizing your home

Posted on Thursday, March, 31st, 2016 at 8:49 PM   (No comments)

An excerpt from Laura’s interview with the Atlanta Journal/Constitution newspaper (August 30, 2015) by H. M. Cauley

For many homeowners autumn means going back on overload, juggling jobs, kids, social activities, family obligations and pre-winter repairs around the house. In the crush to get it all done, it’s easy to let clutter take over.
Experts who have made careers out of organizing other people’s stuff say fall is a good time to clear out that garage, basement or extra bedroom that Junior just vacated. But most people put off these big projects until they are forced to face them in a life-altering moment: a divorce, a job transfer, the death of a parent whose clutter is now inherited. Yet tackling clutter pays off with immediate stress reduction.
“It’s particularly important in bedroom closets and baths, the two places where you start your day,” said Laura Ray, owner of the Marietta-based OrganizeAtlanta.com and president of the National Association of Professional Organizers, Georgia chapter.
“If you have a home for everything, it reduces a lot of the strain and stress. In the bath I like separate drawers or trays for each category: dental, makeup, soaps, medicines, toiletries. A big bin for everything doesn’t work; it’s more helpful to see exactly what you have in the right spot.”
If the prospect of re-organizing seems daunting, Ray suggests whittling it down to one question: What is the most aggravating situation you are trying to solve? Always misplacing your keys? Kids’ backpacks going astray? Losing your laptop?
“Have a home for everything and a simple system” suggests Ray. “When I walk in the door, I put my backpack here. A dish by the door is where I put my keys. If you move something, put it back before you go to bed, so in the morning it’s exactly where it’s supposed to be.”
…And even in this digital age, organizers say the top problem they confront when called on to streamline a residential or commercial space is paper.
Ray estimates that about 60 percent of the jobs she tackles involve cleaning up paper. “I create file systems to get it under control and keep track of taxes and other important financial papers,” she said. “Some clients are challenged by the volume of paper that comes in the door, and they aren’t sure how long to keep it or where to keep it. The IRS website has a good list that tells you what you need to keep and for how long.”
If the prospect of sorting through piles of paper or organizing that crammed garage is overwhelming, it may be time to call in an expert… (END)
